At Dundas and Sackville Streets, concrete is being poured for the first public road in Regent Park in more than half a century. Sackville Street, as well as other streets in the Regent Park neighbourhood, has been cut off from the surrounding community since the area was redeveloped in the 1950s. Regent Park, originally touted as a "garden city," was created with many walkways and park spaces instead of streets. This isolated the neighbourhood's more than 7,500 residents from Toronto's downtown.

In 2004, Toronto Community Housing began consulting with neighbours and residents to develop a plan for community revitalization. The community principles developed included a goal to re-introduce pedestrian friendly streets and to design a safe and accessible neighbourhood. The opening of Sackville Street north of Dundas is an important milestone that contributes to fulfulling these principles.
